The goal is to build a hand with a total closer to 21 than the dealer's without exceeding that value. Number cards are worth their face value, picture cards are worth 10 points, and an ace is worth 1 or 11 at your choice. You start with two cards, the dealer gets one face-up and one face-down. You can take another card (hit), stop (stand), double your bet (double), or split a pair (split). The dealer draws cards according to fixed rules — usually until 17. If you have blackjack (an ace and a ten-value card), the payout is increased.
